"Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world."
— Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa
Hello!
This week we had our third official COMS Club general meeting — Meeting Three: Meet Your Mentor! It was a casual meeting to kickoff our COMS Mentorship Program for the year. Mentor/Mentee groups were announced earlier this week, and this meeting was a chance to do something more social; we played Cal Poly trivia Kahoot and bingo! Shout out to our game winners: Amanda, Shelby, Sammy, and Anastajia! Our blog is updated with a recap each week following our General Meeting (usually by Thursday morning!). Check out the meeting recap on our blog!
Next week, we will be having our fourth official Cal Poly COMS Club meeting of the year! Join us on October 14th from 11am-12pm PT for Meeting 4: Voter Registration Seminar. We will be going over some important information about how to double check your voter registration status, how to register as a voter, as well as sharing information on what sources to use when conducting research! We strongly encourage you all to bring your friends and roommates to this meeting! Subscribe to our Google Calendar to never miss a meeting!

Have you heard about the COMS Town Hall?
COMS Town Hall is a program hosted by the Cal Poly COMS Club. A combination between a town hall meeting and a book club, the goal of this program is to provide a space for Communication Studies students (as well as other interested students and faculty) to discover relevant and/or communication studies (and related) materials to explore interesting and important topics. Additionally, this program provides a platform for students and faculty to build community and dialogue outside of a strictly academic setting! Learn more about the program on our website!
Each week, we will share a topic alongside several materials (videos, podcast episodes, articles, book recommendations, etc.) to get you thinking. The Cal Poly COMS Club will host bi-weekly (every two weeks) a 1-hour facilitated meeting (separate from our usual club meeting) to regroup and discuss the materials presented. Help us learn what YOU are interested in discussing through this short interest form.
There is nothing you have to purchase, and there is no required commitment to the program to join in a meeting! Come by, meet some friends and professors, and have a chat!
Fall 2020 Topic:
Climate Change, the Environment, and Communication
This quarter, we will be diving into discussion about climate change, the environment, and communication (just like the title!). Each meeting, we will generally have a conversation not only about the intersections of these topics, but the real-time events surrounding them, including discussion about the current California fires. Learn more about Environmental Comms from last year's blog post. Donate to the CalFund Wildfire Relief Fund.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 13th from 4-5pm PST Town Hall #1 Materials:
1. Video: A Message from David Attenborough (IG @davidattenborough) 2. Article: Climate Disruption Cannot Be Reversed. The Next Moves Will Be Crucial. (New York Times)
Please reach out with any recommendations for materials, or to suggest next quarter's topic! Reach us at calpolyslocomsclub@gmail.com or fill out this interest form.
Look out for these cool opportunities and events coming up!
COMS Club is happy to consider your posting your event, survey, or open position as part of our newsletter. Send us a message at calpolyslocomsclub@gmail.com with any and all tips!
