[F'20] Newsletter 3: Week Four!

Updated: Oct 26, 2020

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”

– Jim Ryun, Olympic track star

Hello everyone!

Week three's past...Week four, here we come! Hope you all are doing well once again. The quarter system moves fast, fast, fast; we're already a third of the way!

This week, we held our second official COMS Club general meeting — Meeting Two: What is COMS? At the meeting, we introduced a bit about COMS, and then explored some of the subfields related to the discipline. If you were unable to make it, or just want a recap, please take a look at our recap blog posts on the COMS Club website! We have included all the slides from the meeting, as well as copies of the resource sheets we made overviewing our board members' areas of interest: critical cultural communication, media communication, rhetoric and persuasion, social science and research, as well as a resources for general links to get started. Our blog is updated with a recap each week following our General Meeting (usually by Thursday morning!). Check out the meeting recap on our blog!

Next week, we will be having our second official Cal Poly COMS Club meeting of the year! Join us on October 7th from 11am-12pm PT for Meeting Three: Meet your Mentor. At this meeting, we will be introducing our Mentors and Mentees to each other and doing some fun activities to get to know each other better. If you are not participating in the COMS Mentorship Program, it is NOT too late to join! Click here to learn more, and we will get you situated before Wednesday! If you have already submitted an interest form, please check your emails for a welcome email from us and complete the attached confirmation form (let us know if you did not receive the email!). And if not, still stop by for some company, some games, and probably a good bit of trivia! Subscribe to our Google Calendar to never miss a meeting!

Have you heard about the COMS Town Hall?

COMS Town Hall is a program hosted by the Cal Poly COMS Club. A combination between a town hall meeting and a book club, the goal of this program is to provide a space for Communication Studies students (as well as other interested students and faculty) to discover relevant and/or communication studies (and related) materials to explore interesting and important topics. Additionally, this program provides a platform for students and faculty to build community and dialogue outside of a strictly academic setting! Learn more about the program on our website!

Each week, we will share a topic alongside several materials (videos, podcast episodes, articles, book recommendations, etc.) to get you thinking. The Cal Poly COMS Club will host bi-weekly (every two weeks) a 1-hour facilitated meeting (separate from our usual club meeting) to regroup and discuss the materials presented. Help us learn what YOU are interested in discussing through this short interest form.

There is nothing you have to purchase, and there is no required commitment to the program to join in a meeting! Come by, meet some friends and professors, and have a chat!

Fall 2020 Topic: Climate Change, the Environment, and Communication

This quarter, we will be diving into discussion about climate change, the environment, and communication (just like the title!). Each meeting, we will generally have a conversation not only about the intersections of these topics, but the real-time events surrounding them, including discussion about the current California fires. Learn more about Environmental Comms from last year's blog post. Donate to the CalFund Wildfire Relief Fund.

Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 13th from 4-5pm PST Town Hall #1 Materials:

Please reach out with any recommendations for materials, or to suggest next quarter's topic! Reach us at calpolyslocomsclub@gmail.com or fill out this interest form.
