“There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.”
— Margaret J. Wheatley, American writer
Hello everyone!
How has the first two weeks back at Cal Poly been for everyone? All of us at COMS Club hope you've all been well, that you've taken a minute to breathe among the chaos of virtual classes, first quizzes, and everything else life is throwing at you in the moment.
This week, we held our first official COMS Club general meeting — Meeting One: Welcome to COMS Club! At the meeting, we had a wonderful time starting with the great pie vs. cake debate, then we shared a bit about what club meetings will look like and introduced our board members — including our club advisor, Dr. Megan Lambertz-Berndt. Check out the meeting recap on our blog!
Next week, we will be having our second official Cal Poly COMS Club meeting of the year! Join us on September 30 from 11am-12pm PST for Meeting Two: What is COMS? Come learn about some of the path options that you can do with your COMS major. We will be introducing the quickest 101 to what communications studies looks like at Cal Poly, as well as leading more detailed introductions to different communication pathways and COMS courses. Whether you have a five-year plan lined up or are just beginning to explore what COMS has to offer, everyone is invited to stop by to learn something new or share their own interests with the group! Subscribe to our Google Calendar to never miss a meeting!

Have you heard about the COMS Town Hall?
COMS Town Hall is a program hosted by the Cal Poly COMS Club. A combination between a town hall meeting and a book club, the goal of this program is to provide a space for Communication Studies students (as well as other interested students and faculty) to discover relevant and/or communication studies (and related) materials to explore interesting and important topics. Additionally, this program provides a platform for students and faculty to build community and dialogue outside of a strictly academic setting! Learn more about the program on our website!
Each week, we will share a topic alongside several materials (videos, podcast episodes, articles, book recommendations, etc.) to get you thinking. The Cal Poly COMS Club will host bi-weekly (every two weeks) a 1-hour facilitated meeting (separate from our usual club meeting) to regroup and discuss the materials presented. Help us learn what YOU are interested in discussing through this short interest form.
There is nothing you have to purchase, and there is no required commitment to the program to join in a meeting! Come by, meet some friends and professors, and have a chat!
Fall 2020 Topic:
Climate Change, the Environment, and Communication
This quarter, we will be diving into discussion about climate change, the environment, and communication (just like the title!). Each meeting, we will generally have a conversation not only about the intersections of these topics, but the real-time events surrounding them, including discussion about the current California fires. Learn more about Environmental Comms from last year's blog post. Donate to the CalFund Wildfire Relief Fund.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 13th from 4-5pm PST Town Hall #1 Materials:
1. Video: A Message from David Attenborough (IG @davidattenborough) 2. Article: Climate Disruption Cannot Be Reversed. The Next Moves Will Be Crucial. (New York Times)
Please reach out with any recommendations for materials, or to suggest next quarter's topic! Reach us at calpolyslocomsclub@gmail.com or fill out this interest form.
Look out for these cool opportunities and events coming up!
