― Charles M. Schulz, creator of Peanuts
Hello!
Hope everyone's having a dandy week SIX! Midterm season is here so we hope you've been getting rest and reaching out to classmates for support. This week we have lots to cover, including club membership, a community message, and an update on our COMS Town Hall. As we move into the second half of the quarter, we hope that in addition to all these exciting events and meetings, you find a bit of reprieve over the next week!
This past week, we held our Voter Registration extravaganza! We discussed how to turn in your ballot, what are some methods of researching your ballot, and some propositions to look out for. Thanks for everyone who came out to talk 2020 voting things with us! Check out the meeting recap on our blog for notes and our slideshow!
Next week, we will NOT be having a general meeting! Instead, this period of time will be dedicated to the COMS Mentorship Program. Mentors and Mentees are encouraged to use this time to meet up and complete the first two activities shared with them. The general meeting room will be open for Mentors and Mentees to use (via Breakout Room), or they can drop in to ask the COMS board members any questions about the program.
Our next meeting will be on October 28th from 11:10 AM -12 PM PT for Meeting 6: Schedule Builder Session with CLA Advising. This meeting will be co-hosted with CLA Advising where we will be introducing how to use the new Schedule Builder system and answer any questions for you—just in time for Winter Quarter Registration! As this is a pretty new system for new students and returning ones alike, we hope to share some insight and tips to utilize this technology. Stay tuned for big updates on this event soon! Subscribe to our Google Calendar to never miss a meeting!

Thank you all so much for everyone’s interest and patience in the Cal Poly SLO COMS Club!
Club dues are $12 for the 2020-2021 annual membership.

If there is any reason why you cannot pay dues, but would like to be considered a full member of the Cal Poly COMS Club, still fill out the registration form completely. *Note, full membership (Registration and Dues) is not required to participate at Cal Poly COMS Club meetings and events; see membership perks below*

This week, we have a special message below from our COMS community member, Vaughn Paul (he/his)! Share a message through our newsletter by emailing us at calpolyslocomsclub@gmail.com.
Hey COMS Club members! My name is Vaughn, I’m a fourth-year COMS student here at Cal Poly. I want to share a unique business news source I think you’ll enjoy. Morning Brew is a daily business e-newsletter that covers top stories and insights across industries. With a witty and conversational writing style, engaging graphic content and layout, and embedded links to external sources, it’s very different from business news you’re probably used to. Only a 5 minute read, it’s a great way to start each day and it feels good to be informed. And the best part? It’s free! If you’re not reading already, I highly recommend you give it a try and sign up using the QR code on the following slide. Thanks!
Are you interested in combatting climate change? Come by our 2nd COMS Town Hall Meeting to meet our student speaker, Amanda Smith (she/hers)! As a COMS student with a passion for Environmental Communication, Amanda will be sharing some of her insight on this area of study and her experience with it. Please stop by and support our speaker, learn about Environmental Communication, and join the conversation!
Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 27th from 4-5pm PT
Come by whenever you can, meet some friends and professors, and have a chat! This meeting is open to everyone (not just COMS majors so bring a friend or family member!) and there are no materials to purchase. Learn more about the program on our website!
Town Hall #2 Materials:
1. Video: Why humans are so bad at thinking about climate change (Vox)
Please reach out with any recommendations for materials, or to suggest next quarter's topic! Reach us at calpolyslocomsclub@gmail.com or fill out this interest form.
Look out for these cool opportunities and events coming up!
COMS Club is happy to consider your posting your event, survey, or open position as part of our newsletter. Send us a message at calpolyslocomsclub@gmail.com with any and all tips!
