[F'20] Newsletter 6: Week Seven!

Updated: Nov 2, 2020

“My silences had not protected me.

Your silence will not protect you.”

- Audre Lorde, poet and civil rights activist

Howdy!

How are you doing? As we're all separated due to COVID, does it feel like autumn where you're at right now? Hopefully all of us can find a bit of time to grab a warm drink, settle down for a spooky film, or just admire the changing leaves outside!

This past week, we did not have a general meeting, and instead that hour was given to our Mentors and Mentees to continue their getting to know each other activities. We hope all our groups were able to make a bit of time this week to do so - let us know if you need any assistance!

However, this Wednesday, October 28th from 11:10-12am PT, we will be coming back with an exciting event, our Meeting 5: Schedule Builder Session with CLA Advising! This meeting will be held in collaboration with the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) Advising, and we will be going over a demo of the new Schedule Builder registration system. CLA Advising will also stick around to answer any question you have about registration, and the COMS board members will also be there to help answer more specific COMS registration inquiries. This is a pretty new system for new students and returning ones alike, so we hope to share some insight and tips to utilize this technology. As a general reminder, Winter Registration is coming up in the next two weeks, so remember to check your Cal Poly Student Center for your registration time! Subscribe to our Google Calendar to never miss a meeting!

Additionally, we will be having a COMS Town Hall this week! COMS Town Hall is a bi-weekly, casual discussion session. We will be hosting Amanda Smith (she/hers) in a chat about environmental communications at Cal Poly and her experience learning about this subfield of communication studies. Come out and join the Town Hall on Tuesday, October 27th from 4:10-5pm PT!

Thank you all so much for everyone’s interest and patience in the Cal Poly SLO COMS Club!

Club dues are $12 for the 2020-2021 annual membership.

We have just launched our registration form for 2020-21 Club Membership. Are you interested in combatting climate change? Come by our 2nd COMS Town Hall Meeting to meet our student speaker, Amanda Smith (she/hers)! As a COMS student with a passion for Environmental Communication, Amanda will be sharing some of her insight on this area of study and her experience with it. Please stop by and support our speaker, learn about Environmental Communication, and join the conversation!

Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 27th from 4-5pm PT

Come by whenever you can, meet some friends and professors, and have a chat! This meeting is open to everyone (not just COMS majors so bring a friend or family member!) and there are no materials to purchase. Learn more about the program on our website!
